When Should You Repaint Road Markings?

Road markings tell us important information for drivers, traffic, and pedestrians. They show traffic lines, positioning, regulations for stopping, parking, directions, and other information. Some markings also make noise when you drive over them, alerting you that you've crossed a line.

Markings on roads are important because they convey instructions and improve road safety. So, they must be always clear, visible, and well-maintained.

Why Do Road Markings Fade?

The life of line markings is a tough one. Although the paint is durable and resilient, it isn't impervious to damage. The impact of tyres regularly driving over the lines causes general wear and tear. In time, lines and markings become dull, faded, and less visible.

Weathering also impacts the appearance of road lines over time. Heat, cold, rain, and snow all take their toll. Wintertime is a particularly tough period. The increase in rainfall and freezing temperatures is hard on road demarcations. Not only that, but the actions we take to keep our roads safe during winter periods have a negative impact. The salt and sand content from grit can damage markings, and the added strain from snow-clearing vehicles can scrape the paint away.

When is the Best Time for Road Maintenance?

The spring and the summer are the best seasons for road maintenance and refreshing or replacing line markings. During this time, the conditions are better suited to painting roads. The outside temperature is good, and the wind is generally mild, which is ideal for quick drying. The dryer weather is also better for line marking, as it's not ideal to paint a wet surface. Generally, new markings painted in cold, wet weather, won't last as long.

How Long Does Line Paint Last?

Some variables effect the life and performance of line marker paint. Markings will last longer in sheltered areas that are less exposed to weather, and areas that experience less frequent or lighter traffic. Of course, painted lines won't last as long in areas that have particularly heavy traffic, or undergo regular cleaning.

Generally, under the normal conditions of average British weather and even heavy traffic, you can expect line markings to last around four to five years. You should also inspect road markings at least once a year and react to damage.
