What Size Should My Line Marking Stencil Be?

Measure Your Area

Measure the area that you want to mark. Once you know the size of the area that you need to mark, you can determine what template size you need. Remember, when measuring the space for the templates, you must factor in the spaces between each character.

Consistency

When marking multiple areas, make sure your measurements and the stencils you use are consistent. If you are numbering bays, you will want the numbers to be the same size and positioned in the same place.

You can create a simple layout to ensure consistency.

If you are touching up an existing symbol, make sure your stencil matches the current design.

How To Stencil a Good Line Mark

Plan Your Layout

Place your stencil down and double-check everything. Look at the whole design before you start painting.

If you are creating a word or number, decide where you want it to start. This will ensure you have enough room for the rest of the design.

Keep Your Stencil Still

Read the instructions on your stencil. Make sure the stencil is as close to the ground as possible.

If you are working on an uneven surface, this can be difficult. Your stencil may not give you a crisp line if it's sitting on top of dirt or debris.

Ensure no overspray gets onto the area you don't want painted. Try to keep your stencil still while applying the paint.

Read Your Paint Instructions

Make sure you use a paint that suits your requirements. Read the instructions on how far away to spray and how to remove the stencil.

Don't overdo it when applying the paint. Too much paint can make it difficult to get a crisp line.

Try to lift the stencil off the ground when removing it. Once your line mark is dry and cured, you can use the area.

Selecting Paint for Your Line Mark

Just because you have a stencil doesn't mean any paint will work.

Make sure you select a paint that will adhere to your surface. If you already have a coating on your surface, make sure your paint will work with that too.

Check out our line marking aerosol spray paint. If you only need your design for a short period of time, look at our temporary line marking paint. Make sure you read the instructions on how to remove it.

You can also use a line marking machine with a spray lance. The Zebra Lux states that you can purchase a lance to use with stencils, numbers, and other designs.

Storing Your Line Marking Stencils

Each stencil will have different instructions on how to store it. Don't assume that all stencils can be washed in the same way.

Make sure there is no paint left on your stencil and that it hasn't been damaged. Store them as instructed.

Having your letters and numbers stored together can help when you need to touch up your signs.
