Just because a paint is suitable for an indoor concrete floor doesn't mean it will be suitable for an outside road surface.

Finding the Correct Road Marking Paint

What Surface Are You Painting On?

Roads can be made of many different materials. Tarmac, asphalt and concrete, to name a few. Once you know what your surface is made of, check if it's bare or has a sealant on it.

Make sure you check these before ordering. Not all road marking paints will be suitable for all hard surfaces. For example, our Tikkurila Road Marking Paint is suitable for Asphalt and Bitumen. It can be applied using a brush, roller or spray gun.

If you are replacing current road markings, check if the new paint can go over the existing paint. This can be helpful if you don't know what paint was used previously.

How Much Traffic Will Pass Over the Road Markings?

If you're painting a car park or a high traffic area, you will want to make sure the road markings last. Take into consideration how many vehicles will drive over the lines and if they will turn over them.

If you have a line marking machine, you will want to check what paints are compatible with it. Not all liquid paints can be used with all line marking machines.

If you're using an aerosol applicator, check the size of the can and what it will fit. By checking these, you can avoid buying the wrong paint and having to buy a new applicator.

Road Marking Paint Types

Liquid Road Marking Paint

Liquid road marking paint is ideal if you're trying to mark longer distances. This could be painting multiple parking bays or marking miles of motorway. There are many ways to apply liquid road marking paint. Some can be applied with a brush or roller.

We have many types of liquid road marking paint available, including chlorinated rubber and acrylic. The ProSolve Chlorinated Rubber Road Line Paint and Tikkurila Road Marking Paint are both good examples. Make sure you check what the paint will cover and how many coats it requires.

Aerosol Line Marking Paint

Aerosol line marking paint can be useful for smaller jobs. You can use it with a line marking applicator that has wheels or use a handheld applicator for individual markings.

Temporary Line Marking Paint

Sometimes you only need road markings to last for a short period of time. Our temporary line marking paint can be used for these situations.

Things to Consider When Painting

Prepare the Area

Always check the manufacturer's instructions on how to prepare the area. The surface may contain dirt, grime, or old paint that must be removed.

Once the surface is cleaned, it might need a primer to be applied for the road marking paint to adhere.

Measure the Area

You will want to measure the area you need to paint. Once you know the size of the area you need to paint and how wide the line must be, you can work out how much paint you will need.

Remember to factor in how many coats of paint are needed. If you're adding any extra symbols to the road, make sure you have enough paint for that too.

How Long Until the Paint is Dry?

Some road marking paints state that they are touch dry within a few hours. But this doesn't always mean it’s ready for vehicles to drive over.

Always check the paint specifications to learn how long it takes to dry completely.

Road Marking Paint Colours

If you're painting a private site, it's best to keep to the colours that are already there. If you're working on a project that requires certain colours, make sure you follow those guidelines.
